Ah, September once more! The cooler weather is rolling around, and that calls for ways to save money on energy and get prepared for the winter season. You don’t have to be a DIY expert to make sure that your home is ready for the cold season, but you do have to know what you can do to make the season as bearable as possible.

With everything going on around the world with regards to the pandemic, it may have slipped your mind that you need to get your house ready for the colder season. Below, we’ve put together everything that you can do to make bearing the winter much simpler this year.

  1. Start with your exterior of the house. You want to make sure that you clear out the gutters and your drains so that you can ensure that water runs through them with ease. It’s usually the last thing on the to-do list, but it’s an essential. You have to get through the debris and the leaves so that you don’t have water damage to the house.
  2. Have someone come out and check on your boiler. You need to make sure that your boiler is serviced so that you have heating and hot water. If your boiler hasn’t been serviced in a while, you may find that you are dealing with an inept boiler that isn’t working efficiently, which means you’re paying over the odds for your energy bills, too.
  3. Look at the utilities that you paid for last year and then check whether energy switching would be the right thing for you to do. If you paid above and beyond the odds for your energy, you should look into ways you can reduce the costs.
  4. If you have a chimney, have it swept out so that you don’t end up with chimney fires. It’s a big hazard for the home, and they can occur quite often throughout the winter months.
  5. Insulate your home as much as possible. You can save a lot of money on your energy bills when you layer up with rugs and cut to size curtains. You can see whether you can add more insulation to the attic and walls, but the best thing to do is to add blankets and throws to the sofas and beds. These things will give your home immediate insulation.
  6. Wrap our pipes as much as you can this winter. You can protect them from freezing in the cold, and all it takes is a foam layer of insulation to manage it. Frozen pipes tend to burst, and the best thing that you can do is prevent this from happening and therefore, prevent flooding in your home.
  7. Make sure that you have winter cover in your home and buildings insurance. You should make sure that your home policy covers you for fire, flood and theft, and you should see if there is a way to cover storm damage, too.

Your home can be ready for the winter with these seven tips, so get on them quickly and you’ll be ready for the cold!

  1. We’ve had our boiler serviced but we have some exterior work to sort – we need a couple of new windows and some pointing fixing to make sure we’re draft free through the winter.
