When I was due to go on Maternity leave with Athena I had a really long list of things I would do ‘when I’m home with the baby for a year’. Needless to say many of them are still not finished (or even started) and she’s three in a few months! I wasn’t as naive when Arlo was due so didn’t even start a list! However now they’re both a little bit older and I’m only heading back to the ‘day job’ one or two days a week when I return to work, and we’re hopefully moving into our new home sometime soon I want to start crafting again, and when an email arrived telling me about this beautiful book I thought I’d start a new ‘to make and do’ list!
Pirates & Pom Poms is a step-by-step craft book detailing what you need to do to make 26 toys and costumes and decorations that are really gorgeous. I’m always frustrated at the amount of packaging that toys come in (and the fact that so many of them are made from non recycled plastic too!) so making our own toys and play-props really appeals to me! I wanted to make something to showcase with this post but due to estate agent stresses and the lack of a laptop still it will have to wait for another day, but number one on my list is the Toy Lion, number two is the bear/fox animal masks and number three is the gorgeous looking teepee!
The book’s instructions are clear and easy to follow, with step by step instructions that are illustrated when necessary. There is a section to show you how to do some of the specific tasks (like the difference between blanket stitch, running and back stitch etc) so that you don’t have to look anything up elsewhere. At the back of the book are easily photocopiable pages with templates for the masks, letters etc so you can make things again without ruining the book.
There are three sections: Pirates, Woodland Animals and Circus, and doesn’t discriminate by putting things into boys or girls sections and shows pictures of both boys and girls enjoying playing with the crafts once made. When Athena and Arlo are bigger I know they’ll enjoy flicking through and picking what we can make together, I’m almost wishing for long summer holidays already!
