Interior design basics- A guide

Interior designing is not easy at all, especially when you are just starting. It can be extremely confusing with all the options available as well as the new design styles coming up. So, if you are confused and unsure where to start, our guide will help you!

 Choose a style

The first thing to do before you start interior designing is to choose a style or design for your interiors. This means choosing a style that you feel that you connect to. To do so, the first thing you should do is look in your closet. Look at the kind of colours you have the most of- are they leaning more towards neutrals or are they colourful? Next, look at the kind of material you own the most- this will help you understand the kind of textures you like the most and the kind of patterns you prefer. Once you have the basic idea of the kind of colours and textures you like, you can start looking up various kinds of styles in interior design that can cater to your preferences.

 Get inspiration

One of the most important things in interior designing is to get inspiration- and you can look everywhere for it. Start with magazines with interiors and design styles and cut them out to create a visual mood board. Choose between colours, make swatches, and look around the world and the interiors in every part. Use social media apps like Pinterest and Instagram to create a mood board. This can further your understanding of the kind of styles you like. Once you have created the mood boards, look at the similarities between each of them- colours, furniture, style- all of this will give you more clarity about the kind of interior design you like. Don’t worry if your design echoes more than one kind of style- you do not need to strictly incorporate only one kind of design- you can mix and match.

By doing so, you create for yourself a design guide as well as a guide to things you like. This will help you out when you are deciding on the colour palette as well as the kind of furniture you like.

Choose a colour palette

Your colour palette will decide the theme of your house. The best way to choose a colour palette is by using the three-colour theory- use one colour for the walls, one for bigger accents like furniture and one for smaller accents like décor. This will make the entire place look cohesive as well as balanced. This theory, Of course, is not something you HAVE to follow, but it is a good place to start. It is important, however, that you do not buy matching furniture sets- they make the place look very tacky. Instead, use furniture items that are matching in accents but different in design. This will provide visual depth to your place and make it look better thought-out.

It is important to remember that interior designing is an art, and by including actual art or taking inspiration from artworks, you can enhance your place and make it look more timeless and aesthetic. Remembering the difference between cool and warm tones will also help you in deciding how to paint and design each room:

  • Warm colours: They draw the attention of the eye, often making the room seem smaller and narrower. These colours can be yellow, red, orange etc. They are good to use in rooms with narrow and awkward shapes to make them look smaller and more cohesive.
  • Cool colours: These colours draw the attention away from the eye, making the room look bigger and wider. They include colours such as dark green, cool blue etc. They can be used in smaller rooms to give the illusion of a bigger room.
  • Monochrome and bright: If you would like to have an accent wall in your home, you will have to decide to choose between monochrome and bright. For a monochrome look, you can choose a darker tone than the tone of your other walls to create depth and impact. On the other hand, if you have gone with neutral walls and want a pop of colour, having an accent wall in a bright colour will make the room look better. You can also choose to wall mount your technology on your accent wall so that no focal points are competing with each other. To get your TV wall mounted by professionals, click here.

Lighting

You mustn’t miss the lighting, as it can make or break the room. Lighting also decides how the colours look on your walls- the same colour can look very different in different lights. Make sure, before you choose your colours, you look at it in natural light, the light you plan to install in your room as well as in bright lights. This will ensure that you choose the right colour and the right lighting.
